Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Toolbox was working fine and I was receiving faxes to my computer until about a week ago. After the latest Windows 10 update, HP Toolbox will not start no matter what I do. I've tried running as administrator and tried starting it through the command prompt, but to no avail. I want to be able to receive faxes to my computer, but I'm not sure how I can do that without HP Toolbox working. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times using the latest software on the HP website, and I've tried installing it with the original disk that came with the printer but nothing seems to work. HP Toolbox will install, however it will not run. I've tried the diagnostic tools and I've tried to run it in compatability mode but nothing seems to work. Somebody please help.

Hi @Alphas,

Thanks for getting back to me.

There is corruption on the computer.

Try the following steps:

If the issue persists: Please create a new administrator account and install the software again.

  • Does the HP Utility load?

NOTE: User Accounts in Windows 10:

standard user (Users) - The standard account is an unelevated restricted user account that can be a local account or Microsoft account. It can help protect your computer by preventing users from making changes to the system that affects everyone who uses the computer. When you are signed in to Windows with a standard account, you can do almost anything that you can do with an administrator account, but if a standard user tries to do something that requires elevated rights (ex: run as administrator), Windows will display a UAC prompt for the standard user to enter the password of an administrator account for approval and confirmation before allowing the action.

administrator user - Is an unelevated administrator account that is created by default during the installation of Windows, or is already setup for you on an OEM (ex: Dell) computer. This account can be a local account or Microsoft account. An administrator account has complete access to the computer, and can make any desired changes. If an administrator user tries to do something that requires elevated rights (ex: run as administrator), Windows will display aUACprompt for the administrator user to approve before allowing the action.

Built-in "Administrator" - The hidden built-in elevated "Administrator account" is a local account that has full unrestricted access rights to the PC. By default, this "Administrator" account will not be prompted by UAC. Anything that runs while signed in to this "Administrator" account will also have full unrestricted access to the PC, so it is not recommended to use the built-in "Administrator" account for everyday usage. It's recommended to only use the built-in "Administrator" account as needed instead.

Otherwise, I would 'Restore from a system restore point' using this guide, Recovery options in Windows 10 or contact HP Phone Support.

Contacting HP for service in all countries/regions except Asia Pacific.
What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone number
Case number and phone number appear.

Please respond to this post with the results. I look forward to hearing from you. Good Luck! 🙂

Hi @Alphas,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you're unable to open the HP ToolBox  for your HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer. I would be happy to help you and please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution', if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos.

I see that you have done most of the troubleshooting already. What I believe this is happening because of incorrect file association for the default program. There is a patch for this issue.

  • Please follow these steps to backup the registry.
  • Create the script or download and run the exe below.

Windows 8- Use these steps as a guideline.

  1. On the computer screen, right-click or tap and hold the bottom right, and then click or tap Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type regedit, and then click or tap OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
  3. Click or tap File, and then click or tap Export. The Export Registry File window opens.
  4. From the Save in: dropdown menu, select Desktop.
  5. In the File name: box, type backup.
  6. In the Save as type: dropdown menu, select Registration Files (*.reg).
  7. For Export range, select All, and then click or tap Save.
NOTE: You can delete this file once the issue has been resolved.
  8. On your computer, click or tap Apps, in the search box, type Notepad, and then press Enter. A Notepad window opens.
  9. Copy the following text, and then paste it in Notepad.
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.hta]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.hta]
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.hta] "PerceivedType"="text" @="htafile" "Content Type"="application/hta"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.hta\PersistentHandler] @="{eec97550-47a9-11cf-b952-00aa0051fe20}"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile] "EditFlags"=dword:00100000 @="HTML Application" "FriendlyTypeName"="@C:\\Windows\\System32\\mshta.exe,-6412"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\CLSID] @="{3050f4d8-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B}"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\DefaultIcon] @="C:\\Windows\\System32\\mshta.exe,1"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\Shell]
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\Shell\Open]
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\Shell\Open\Command] @="C:\\Windows\\System32\\mshta.exe \"%1\" %*"
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.hta]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.hta\OpenWithList]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.hta\OpenWithProgids] "htafile"=hex(0):
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.hta\UserChoice] "Progid"="htafile"
  10. Save the text file on the Desktop as Fix_hta.reg, and then close Notepad.
  11. Double-click or double-tap the Fix_hta.reg file that you just created on the Desktop.
  12. Click or tap OK, and then click or tap OK again.
  13. Open HP Printer Assistant.

Tried the fix and it still won't work. Not sure if it's a compatability issue with Windows 10 or what, but HP ToolboxFX will not start.

Followed all the steps you listed and it stil didn't work. SFC found no errors. I eventually uninstalled and reinstalled using the elevated administrator account and it still didn't work. Rebooted and logged on through elevated administrator and uninstalled all HP software using CCleaner, Cleared all registry entries referencing HP, Fixed any registry problems and reinstalled using the original disk. This time HP ToolboxFX opened and ran flawlessly. Rebooted into standard user and all is well. Not really sure exactly what fixed the problem, but after clearing the registry and installing through the elevated administrator things seem to be working ok. Thanks for the help.
