I ran the utility. Only the printer section will actually run. When I click the scanner portion, it just exits. The PC doesn't even recognize the device as a scanner anymore. This appears to have happened at some point after applying a Windows Critical update. Whatever the update is, it renders this scanner useless in Windows 7.

Hi Radiopeople,

Run the following Utility, and let me know what error messages you receive?

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02744415

Can you make a standalone copy from the printer?

Can you scan using Microsoft Paint?

Windows WIA scan: "The Windows Imaging Service is not running. Save your work, close all applications ... "

Twain Scan: "The Twain component is not functioning because the product is being used by another process..."

And, uninstalling and reinstalling the HP drivers and software does no good. I've also tried multiple versions and none of them work.

Hi Radiopeople,

Follow the steps below to check the WIA Service:

1. Type services.msc in run or search program and files

2. Scroll down to the WIA Windows Image Acquisition

3. Make sure that this service is running. Click Stop, and then Restart to make sure

4. Restart the computer

Restart the Dependencies services:

1. Click on Start, in Search box type “services” without quotes.

2. Scroll down until you see Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

3. Double click on it and go to the tab called Dependencies.

4. 2 services should be listed.

5. Exit that window and look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

6. Make sure it’s on manual or if it is on Auto, just leave it. Make sure the service is started though.

7. Go to Shell Hardware Detection and Double click.

8. Set the Start up Type as Manual and hit Apply.

9. You should be able to Start the service by hitting Start.

10. Now you are done and the Twain Manager should be working and not give you an error.

Check dependencies or sub dependencies:

Right click on WIA (Windows Imaging Acquisition) selecting first properties and then the dependencies tab. It should list: Remote Procedure Call RPC  and  Shell Harward Detection

Under RPC it will then list DCOM Service Process Launcher and RPC Endpoint Mapper Go back to the main services.msc list and then right click and start all the items listed as dependencies or sub dependencies under WIA

I tried what you suggested.  Although the WIA Windows Image Acquisition services is running, when I click on the Dependencies tab after selecting Properties, I see no services listed.

I did check the Remote Procedure Call, and it is set on Auto.

As it turns out, none of the services listed  the main services.msc list show any services listed under the dependencies tab.

I'm still stuck

I did as you requested (I ran the HP Scan Diagnostic Utility v4.2 back on 3/22/12 as well -- check that posting)

Basically, at the Windows (WIA) Scan prompt, it gives me an error message that says

The HP Scan Diagnostic Utility has detected a scan software problem [WIA].  Please install latest full feature software and drivers.... etc. etc.

I have already been through all this before without luck!

It seems to me that the way Windows 7 is configured on my machine is preventing me from utilizing the TWAIN driver to scan.  I'm curious as to why I don't see any "dependencies" when I review the services shown  in the services.msc list.

Two other curious aberrations have been happening over this time.  Somehow I lost the Windows "snipping" tool.  Every time I try to use that Windows accessory I get an error that says "The Snipping Tool is not working on your computer right now, Restart your computer and try again."  And, of course, doing that brings me no luck with that either.

The other aberration is that I can't seem to get the system restore feature to work properly any more.

I don't know whether describing these two other unrelated issues I am having with my computer can shed any light as to why I can't scan using the HPSCAN.exe or TWAIN driver for my cm1415fnw, but I thought it I'd give it a try

One last point -- the recommendation made to me back on 3/24 that, "It appears that the operating system on this computer is contributing to the installation failures. I would suggest backing up your data, and then run a full system restore on the computer to isolate issues with the operating system. Once you have completed the full system restore install the printer before installing any other software."

I was leery of doing just that because of all the effort that would be involved with starting from scratch.  Then, when I saw the post from Radiopeople on 5/1/12 and that he had the exact same issue, and that after reformatting and restoring his entire sytem, the problem returned, I was glad I didn't resort to such drastic measures.

However, his issue was resolved but mine remains. I believe the problem is due to subtle changes in my computer's configuration as a result of the behind-the-scenes automatic updates that Windows implements right before I shut the machine.

Hi iacofr,

From what you are explaining to me it almost sounds like you may have been affected by a computer virus. If you have had a virus issue then it may be in your best interest to do a recovery on your system to completely isolate the virus from causing you anymore issue on your operating system.
