Pavillion
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

I was forced to restart laptop for updates this morning. Once the the computer restarted, update made it to 92% and below the HP logo on screen was "Error C0000022 applying update operation 54271 of 555278 (\Regi...)", then it changed to "Fatal error.....". I have a Pavillion AMD, think my OS is Windows 8.1 but not sure if 32 or 64-bit, and never could update to Windows 10 as it would never complete the update. I have an anti-virus protection on laptop. I definitely do not want to restore to factory settings as I was working on something really important. Please help.

Hey there! @tamekafrank10, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!

I understand while updating windows you got a Fatal error C000002 on your PC.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes to your PC?

Did you manually download and install the windows update?

Try performing a system restore on your PC and then try running the windows update again.

Refer this article to know how to perform a system restore on your PC.

Most probably the issue occurred because the Windows Update failed to download/install correctly.
It may be due to some 3rd party interference or just because of faulty/buggy update from Microsoft - happens occasionally.

1. Please, shut down the computer using the power button
2. Power it on.
3. Keep tapping the F2 key on your PC system diagnostics screen would open.
3. Perform System Test >> Quick test.

Refer this article to know more information about system diagnostics.

Let me know if this works!

Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂

Thank you for responding @MrRobot.  I will try your recommendation.  I'm away from my laptop right now, but as soon as I get to it, I will try this solution.

The last time an update was done was maybe 3 or 4 days prior.  I do think there was a pop-up about a Microsoft change, now that I think about it and it asked me to allow a change or for Microsoft to make change or something.  I think i accepted the change or whatever it was, although I don't think I've ever seen that pop-up before once computer is starting up (this may be the culprit????).  I also had issues updating my Adobe Illustrator CC after this update, which showed there was a fatal error with the update.  I tried updating the Adobe Illustrator a few more times, but was unsucessful....waited to try early the next morning and it worked.  Computer worked fine, or so I thought, and noticed there was a message that my computer would need to be restarted for update(s) in (1) day.  My computer finally gave me a countdown without an option to perform update later.  Once the computer restarted and attempted the update, that's when I got a fatal error message.

@MrRobot, do I need to do the system restore before the system diagnostics, or diagnostics before the restore?

@tamekafrank10, It was a quick response from you. I was waiting for your response.

Thanks for the detailed issue description.

Try performing a system restore on your PC and then try running the system diagnostics on your PC.

Once after the system restore is complete update windows make sure you don't shut down your PC unless the windows update is complete.

Windows update might take longer than usual so do not interrupt your PC while it is updating.

Hope to hear from you!

Take care! 🙂
