Hi,

Recently I decided to get a new graphics card to my computer since it was fps dropping and couldn't handle the recently released games. Not did I only have to buy new a graphics card but also a power supplier since my current power supplier wouldn't work with the new graphics card.

And what I finally decided to buy:

Graphics card – ASUS GeForce® GTX 760 DC Mini

So when I finally got the graphics card and the PSU and had installed both components in my computer it wouldn't boot for some strange reason. Still I haven't been able to fix this problem and whenever I try to boot the computer with the new components it will get stuck on this screen. (Link below).

As you can clearly see it says "Press the ESC key for Startup Menu". And whenever I do press the ESC key nothing will happen, it will just get stuck on this screen and nothing more happens. I have also tried to spam F10 before the screen came up to bring up the Startup Menu, but it didn't work.
I then tried to update my BIOS from v.7.14 to v.7.15. Unfortunately, no success. 

However, I then tried to remove the new graphics card and leave the new PSU in the computer, and this actually works so there shouldn't be any problems with the PSU I presume. But whenever I install the new graphics card same problem as before occur.

Operating system: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
System manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard 
System model: p7-1072sc
BIOS: Ver: CHI_715.ROM vCHI7.15

Any comments would really cheer me up and I really need fast answers because I only have 7 days left to be able to return the components if I don't want them and want to get my money back.

Have you checked that your system is set to boot in legacy or UEFI

First of all I'd like to thank you for the reply.

Secondly, I found out that my system is set to BIOS (Legacy BIOS). Should it be changed to UEFI? – If so how do I change it, because I cannot find any solutions to change it on windows 7.

Put the original video card back in and go to slot security as in the following image. Disable slot security for the PCI Express x16 slot. Once you have done that you can remove the original card and replace it with the new card and try booting up again.  

 

There is also a strong  likelihood that since you have an older motherboard with support for PCI Express x16 Gen 1.0 and your video card is a gen 3.0 unit there is an inherent incompatibility. I would return the video card if  ASUS support does not have a workaround for the video card that allows it to work with motherboards that have PCI Express x16 slots Gen 1.0 .

If this does not work, then you may have to go to the ASUS support website to see if there is a vBIOS update available for your new video card.

The first option you told me did unfortunately not work.

Well I have read that just because your graphics card has the gen 3.0 and the motherboard 1.0 doesn't mean it wont work. It will support it but it will not give 100 percantage efficiency, right? Correct me if I am wrong, but many have told me this.

 

And about the new vBIOS udpate – I am a bit of afriad to do that actually. Doesn't my motherboard only support the specific BIOS update for my PC's model from HP?

The option I gave you was a suggestion to try that would hopefully provide a workaround. Manufactured and preconfigured desktop PCs are not actually meant to be upgraded. There is also no guarantee that any upgrade you attempt on your own will work.That is an unfortunate matter of fact. That is why my own desktop PCs are configured and built my my own hand. Even in that case I use the manufacturer's recommendation when I purchase memory modules.

 

They may have told you that, but as you have discovered, it is not working with your OS and desktop motherboard's hardware. Some motherboards just won't work with some video cards. I  have experienced that even with enthusiast level ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards. Your PC did not work with an ATI\AMD card so try an NVIDIA card. Talk to the vendor. They are likely to be quite familiar with the issue you are facing.

 

You will have to rely on ASUS for information on this problem regarding a workaround. Contact ASUS support and let them know it is not working. Advise them that your desktop PC is an older model with a motherboard that has a PCI Express x16 Gen 1.0 slot. vBIOS is the BIOS that is on the video card. Yes. It has its own BIOS.

 

Many people have faced the same issue when trying to upgrade older desktop PCs with new generation PCI Express x16 video cards.

I did go to the Startup menu with my old graphics card, I went on to the settings and changed some things(not completely sure what I changed) . Thereafter I switched the old graphics card with the new and now when I boot it I get a black screen with an underscore in the upper left corner. I guess this have something to do with the vBIOS right? 

I'm so thankful for your replies and I will now try to update the graphics card BIOS. I'll reply later again if it's working or not!

If I were you I would return the card and try one that uses NVIDIA instead of ATI Radeon.

Sorry, I had it backwards. Try an AMD\ATI video card in place of the NVIDIA GTX video card.

 

If you are within six days of the limit of time you can return the card, then you are pushing it pretty close to perhaps being stuck with a video card that won't work in your current PC.
