Pavilion 17 f-000 series
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Hello everyone,

I am frustrated. My Pavilion laptop suddenly has a RAM issue. I updated Windows 8.1 to Win 10. It all worked perfectly fine for months. Suddenly the computer got reeeeally slow. My hard drives is constantly working hard. I found out that from the built in 6GB RAM 4.6 GB are hardware reserved. I don't know what is causing this.
What I tried thus far
- Run Windows memory test: no faulty messages
- Run MemTest86: no errors
- uncheck the boxes in msconfig under the second tab
- set some values in RegEdit as instructed by some YouRube Videos. Didn't help.
- Windows still shows me the built in 6 GB, but only about 1.4 of those are actually usable. I ran Ubuntu to find out if it has the same issue. It showed the same thing. It finds the RAM sticks but can only use 1.4 GB.

My laptop is kind of old. I don't have any warranty left. Any further information you need to help?

I don't even know how to open up the laptop. I undid all screws but still couldn't take the back cover off the laptop. I wanted to have a look at the inside. Maybe some excessive dirt or a RAM stick isn't plugged in properly?

Please help me. Any ideas what I could do to find out what's wrong suddenly? As I said, it used to run smoothly for a couple of months after the update to Win10 and it never had problems before with Win8.

Thanks so much guys!

Best,
Thomas

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand the PC has a slow performance since the last update on Windows 10,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Did you attempt a system restore to an earlier known working date?

Have you performed a hardware test using the HP Diagnostics tool? (Click here, for instructions if you haven't).

The best way to do that is using the HP Guided Troubleshooter:

Click here to access it (simply select your description of the issue from the bottom of the screen to gain access to the next set of steps that should resolve your concern).

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

That'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Hi Riddle_D,

Thank you for offering me your help!

In fact I did restore the computer, i also did a complete clean install of Win10 with the built in function and also with a Windows Media Install flash drive. Both did not completely wipe the system and kept some of the personal data. This stunned me. Why did it still have my user name and passiert when I logged in to Windows10 and all the standardised HP games when I restored Windows? I was wondering if it kept any other settings that it should not have.

I haven't done the HP hardware diagnostics yet. Will try that soon and post here if there is any improvement or help from that. HP troubleshooting on the website brought me nowhere so far.

Thanks for your help again,
Thomas

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

It's possible the reason you saw some of your previous settings are because you have a Microsoft account and it usually synchronizes the data with the cloud so that it's easier to use your personal settings in case you login elsewhere.

Although, I recommend you perform the hardware test to ensure there aren't any hardware failures if the PC is still slow or has issues as such and get back to me with the results.

I'll be awaiting your response,

Take your time.

Hi,

Can I somehow attach some pictures of the performed tests and my hardware information retrieved from the HP diagnostics application? Logs and pictures will follow soon once I know how to attach them. The tests passed everything anyway.

You may note from those what I noted here. It says I have 6GB of RAM plugged in. That's correct and as it should be. But the two tests only tested 1.35GB of my memory. So there is something wrong! It's even less than the available amount shown in Windows 10 (1.4 GB).

What is this?

Thanks,
T

I appreciate your time and efforts,

To Clarify, after you reinstalled your Windows, does the slow performance issue still occur?

If it doesn't and the tests have passed, you should be good to go.

Perhaps, you could attach the pictures so that I understand what memory is it that isn't showing as much as it should, there's an image icon that you could click on, followed by attaching either the image or link to the image:

The above screenshot should help identify the tab to attach an image.

Hi Riddle_Decipher,

Yes, the issue still occurs after re-installing Windows 10. But I am afraid it did not wipe out Windows completely as it still has my user details and all the unnecessary games when Windows starts up. I do not know how to perform a clean install and get rid of everything. Perhaps this would solve it, I thought. Maybe there are some errors in Windows' settings that could not have been detected or repaired. No idea.

Anyway, thanks for telling me how to attach pictures. Here are a few for you. Hope those help you to help me.

I appreciate your time and efforts,

It looks like this is a hardware failure and requires either a repair or replacement service set up order:

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true

(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get the phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty repair services under the manufacturer's warranty will be free of charge.

Hello,

You said "it looks like" this is a hardware issue. How can I be sure it is? I do not want to replace anything if I don't have to, and I also don't have a warranty anymore so I'd probably rather even replace the RAM on my own, if that would fix it.

But the damage could also be somewhere else, and I don't know exactly where or what is damaged. Is there a way to find this out? If it's the motherboard, for example, repairing wouldn't make sense as it most likely would be cheaper to buy a new laptop then instead.

Cheers,

Thomas

Hi @ThomasDudek86,

I have read the post completely. You've demonstrated profound technical expertise and an uncanny knack to try and resolve things. Brilliant effort and great patience too.  Kudos to you for a job well done. 🙂  As @Riddle_Decipher is out of office for the day, I am taking over from here.

Sometimes all diagnostics could pass and still the issue could be hardware related. There is more to it than meets the eye here.

  • To find out what's happening, one way of doing it would be is to swap this hard drive out with another working hard drive that is healthy if you have one from a different computer.
  • Then format that hard drive and install windows on that hard drive and check if that does the trick for you. If it does, then you are good to go.
  • The other workaround would be is to connect this hard drive to another computer. Then format this hard drive and check if it works fine. If it does the try connecting it back to this computer and check if it continues to work correctly. If it does, then the issue should be fixed.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Cheers!
